Why do circuit breakers keep tripping?

A breaker trips for one of three measurable reasons: the circuit is overloaded, a wire or device has a short, or a ground fault is leaking current. Repeated trips are the breaker doing its job — the fix is finding which of the three it is.

Overload is the common case: too many amps on one circuit, often a kitchen or space-heater circuit. The durable fix is a dedicated circuit for the heavy load, not a bigger breaker.

Shorts and ground faults are fault conditions, not capacity problems. They are located by isolating the circuit and testing segment by segment — never by resetting the breaker until it holds.

  1. Map the trip

    Note what was running when it tripped, and which outlets went dark.

  2. Unplug and reset once

    If it holds empty and trips under load, it is likely overload; if it trips instantly, suspect a fault.

  3. Call it in

    A licensed electrician measures the circuit and gives you the cause in writing.

No. The breaker is sized to protect the wire behind it. A bigger breaker on the same wire removes the protection and is a fire risk.
