Level 1 vs. Level 2 EV charging

Compare

Level 1 vs. Level 2 EV charging

The difference is a full overnight charge versus a slow trickle — and one dedicated circuit.

Level 1 (120 V)

Plugs into a standard outlet and adds roughly 3 to 5 miles of range per hour. Workable for short commutes and plug-in hybrids; no installation required.

Level 2 (240 V)

A dedicated 240-volt circuit adding 20 to 40 miles of range per hour — a full charge overnight. Requires panel capacity and a permitted installation.

Choose Level 2 if you drive daily or share one vehicle charger; choose Level 1 only if your daily mileage is low and charging time does not matter.
